About the Item

Wheel-thrown pottery vase, probably Japanese Awaji pottery, dating from around the 1930s. The vessel has an ovoid body that rises to a compact neck, from which three loop handles and a single angled spout emerge. The clustered openings give the piece a graphic, almost architectural profile and allow it to be used as a sculptural vase or as a standalone object. The surface is covered in a high-gloss glaze with vertical brushed lines in black over bands of yellow, green and red. The colours overlap and break slightly at the edges of the brushwork, creating a layered, linear effect associated with certain Awaji glazes from the early 20th century. The interior is glazed, and the base is left more simply finished. This vase works well on a console, shelf or low table, either empty or with a few stems placed in the openings. Good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use.
