About the Item

Mid Century Modern ceramic vase features an abstract motif in Burgundy red glaze, sponged on in free-flowing patterns and outlined with gold, on light green background. The decor appears to be an uncommon variation on the Jaspatina glaze, that was introduced by Jasba in 1955 and most probably inspired by the Japanese kintsugi repair method. The rim and the base are accentuated with thin gold border. The vase is signed on the bottom with "Germany" and model/size numbers. Jasba Keramik was founded in 1926 by Jakob Schwaderlapp in Ransbach-Baumbach; it become one of well-known manufacturers of West German Pottery in mid 20th century. The company produced a variety of ceramics, including vases, jugs, and bowls, inspired by ancient civilizations. In 1957, the ceramicist and décor designer Cilli Wörsdörfer joined Jasba after working at Ruscha, where she had created the popular 'Domino' and 'Milano' décors in 1954. Her colorful, abstract work revitalized the previously conventional appearance of Jasba's ornamental ceramics. She created the décors 'Tuscany,' 'Udine,' and 'Verona' (1957), followed up with 'Ghana' and 'Karo' (1958). In 1960 Wörsdörfer ended her artistic career and handed over her position to Christiane Reuter, who created 'Bunte Welt der Keramik' (Colorful World of Ceramics) series, initiating the introduction of newer stylistic tendencies and bright colorful glazes at Jasba in late 1962. Reuter is also celebrated as the designer of the iconic 'Acapulco' dinnerware décor for Villeroy and Boch (1967). In 1959 Jakob Schwaderlapp founded Ceramano, Jasba sister company, to pursue the production of innovative, higher-end forms and glazes, intended to resemble the work of studio potters. In 1975 Jasba ceased production of vases, and the company concentrated on industrial items and architectural tiles.

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...
