English Staffordshire Majolica Glazed Hand Holding Cattails Spill or Posy Vase
About the Item
A Majolica glazed spill vase from the Staffordshire pottery region of England, circa 1860. The vase is molded as a woman’s hand holding a vessel formed of cattails or bullrush plants. The vase has a rolled rim and a pink interior. The base shows the wrist with a ruffled cuff and wrapped in a pearl bracelet, a ring is seen on the index finger.
Hand vases were popular during the Victorian era for holding posies or spills. Spill vases have a cylindrical holder for containing splints or rolled paper tapers called spills, for transferring flame to light a candle or a pipe from a hearth fire.
10 inches tall x 3 inches in diameter.
