Meissen Cobalt Ground Pâte-sur-pâte Figural Vase, attributed to Leuteritz Germany, second quarter 19th century We are pleased to offer an extraordinary opportunity to acquire one the rarest techniques created by the Meissen factory, Pâte-sur-pâte. This technique is difficult to photograph, the exquisite cobalt blue background is very reflective. Please excuse the reflections in some photographs, they are not flaws. This fine vase of baluster form has a deep cobalt- blue glaze, this enables the many layers of the white porcelain Pâte-sur-pâte decoration to stand out. This work has twin gilt & polychromed figural handles. The body of the vase decorated in Pâte-sur-pâte with a putto in floral background, with gilt details, to the front and to the back of the vase. Raised on a square pedestal base. Marked with the underglaze blue crossed swords marks and incised numbers. This vase is attributed to renowned Meissen artist, Ernst August Leuteritz (German, 1818–1893) Ernst August Leuteritz is responsible for raising the achievements of Meissen during his employment at the Meissen Factory. More on Pâte-sur-pâte Pâte-sur-pâte is a French term meaning "paste on paste". It's a method of porcelain decoration in which a relief design is created on an unfired, unglazed body, usually with a coloured body, by applying successive layers of white porcelain slip. Once the main shape is built up, it is carved away to give fine detail, before the piece is fired. The work is very painstaking and may take weeks to complete Overall Measurements The vase stands 5.75 -inches high The opening of the vase has a diameter of 1.75 -inches, 3-inches wide to handles, the body of the vase has a depth of 2-Raised on a 1.75-inch square pedestal base.
