Exquisite Art Deco Vases, designed by Charles Catteau (1880-1966), executed by Boch Frères Keramis, Belgium. Matte black with gold hand painted spirited horse on the front and a stylized tulip on the back. Gilt edge wave handles on the sides and gilt trim around top and bottom. Catteau, who was French, was the head designer at Boch Freres from 1907 through 1946. He is a most highly esteemed designer. Price is for the pair. Decor number D 2447, model 1291, dating to 1938, as described in, "Art Deco Ceramics, Made in Belgium-Charles Catteau" by M.Pairon, Ed.Fondation Charles Catteau, Aartselaar 2006. Measurements each: 9 1/2 inches high x 10 inches wide x 5 1/2 inches deep. Charles Catteau was born in Douai, France, in 1880. He began working as a decorator at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres in 1902, and in 1903 he graduated from the National Ceramics School in Sèvres. His first job after earning his degree was at the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur in Nymphenburg, near Munich. In 1906, Catteau moved to La Louvière, Belgium, to work as a designer at Boch Frères Keramis. In 1907 Catteau was made head of the Boch Frères decoration department, which eventually came to be known as the Atelier de Fantaisie. He retired in 1946 and died in Nice in 1966.
