Pair 19th Century French Gilt Spelter Vases on Marble Bases with Vine Motifs

About the Item

Decorate a mantel or a wine room with this elegant pair of antique vases related to vine and grapes. Crafted in France circa 1880 and made of spelter (or white metal), the vases stand on a square red marble base dressed with small brass tapered feet at the bottom. Both vases with a vine basket form at the pediment, are embellished with grape and vine motifs, while the center is embellished with a young Bacchus figure his arm raised. The Napoleon III decorative vessels are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorn a rich patinated bronze dore finish. Bacchus, known as Dionysus in Greek mythology, is closely associated with wine and is often depicted as the god of the grape harvest, wine making, and the joyous celebrations that accompany the consumption of wine. One of the central myths associated with Bacchus is the discovery or invention of wine. In some versions of the myth, Dionysus is credited with teaching mortals how to cultivate grapes and make wine. This gift was considered a great boon to humanity, as wine became a symbol of pleasure, fertility, and transformation. 5.25"W x 5.25"D x 15"H
