Pair of French Champleve Enamel Bronze Engraved Glass Trumpet Form Vases
About the Item
A pair of French Champleve enamel gilt bronze mounted engraved glass form vases.
Clear trumpet form glass vase, gilt bronze with lion feet at the base.
Late 19th century.
Champlevé enameling is a decorative technique that fuses a powdered glassy material into a recess in a metal surface through the application of heat, similar to cloisonné in that the enamel is applied to discrete cells separated by metal. However, in champlevé, cells or troughs are cast into or cut away from the metal base, leaving a raised metal line between the cells which forms the outline of a design. The cells are then filled with molten or powdered glass and fired.
