Pair of World's Exhibition Vases

This extraordinary pair of Minton vases represents the pinnacle of 19th-century British ceramic artistry, created in 1876 likely for the 1876 Philadelphia World's Fair, and shown again in the 1878 Paris Universal Exposition—two of history's most significant international showcases. Documented with the exhibition number "1744" in Minton's official exhibition logbooks, these monumental vases exemplify the technical virtuosity and artistic brilliance that established Minton as a global leader in ceramic production. The exceptional provenance is further enhanced by their inclusion in the renowned Al-Tajir collection, assembled by Mohammed Mehdi Al-Tajir, former UAE Ambassador to the United Kingdom and once rumored to be the world's wealthiest individual.
The vases showcase masterful hand-painted floral decoration against a sumptuous black ground, demonstrating exceptional artistry and sophisticated composition. Their imposing form is enhanced by elegantly gilded twin handles and decorative bands that reflect superior craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. The design brilliantly integrates Japanese-inspired aesthetics within a classical Western form, perfectly capturing the cosmopolitan sensibilities of the late 19th century and reflecting the period's fascination with cross-cultural artistic exchange. Each vase retains its original ebonized wooden plinth, completing the presentation as it would have appeared to the 13 million visitors who attended the Paris Exposition.
Each painted scene is signed ‘W. Mussill’ to the lower edge. Originally from Austria, Mussill studied painting in Paris, coming to work for Minton in the 1870s after initially painting for the Sèvres manufactory. He specialised in large natural compositions like this pair, always painting in a distinctive free style with heavy use of impasto. He frequently executed special commissions for royalty.
Minton's rise to prominence began with their establishment in 1793, but it was their revolutionary ceramic techniques displayed at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London that catapulted them to international recognition. Queen Victoria herself purchased Minton pieces, declaring them to be "in the best taste," providing royal endorsement that solidified the firm's reputation. By the 1870s, Minton had perfected the creation of exhibition-quality pieces specifically designed to showcase British supremacy in the decorative arts. World's Fairs represented the ultimate platform for artistic competition between nations, and Minton consistently produced works of exceptional quality to maintain Britain's cultural and industrial standing on the global stage.

Minton
Pottery is one of the oldest decorative art forms, and Minton is one of its historical masters. For more than 250 years, the English company was a premier producer of porcelain and ceramic wares. Its factory was known for detailed and brightly colored Victorian tableware, including dinner plates and serving pieces.
Thomas Minton founded the Minton factory in 1793 in Stoke-upon-Trent, England. It initially made earthenware but introduced bone china in 1798. When Minton died in 1836, the company passed to his son, Herbert Minton. The younger Minton was a savvy businessman with an eye for design. He introduced glossy majolica earthenware to the factory’s repertoire and hired skilled artists and designers like Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, boosting the company’s reputation.
In 1851, Minton debuted its majolica at the Great Exhibition in London. It became a royal family favorite and was even used to tile the Royal Dairy at Windsor Home Park. Minton majolica was also displayed on the monumental Saint George and the dragon fountain at the 1862 London International Exhibition.
Colin Minton Campbell, a nephew of Herbert Minton, took over the family business in 1858. He led the company to the head of the 1870s English art pottery movement. In the 1890s, French porcelain artist Marc-Louis Solon helped modernize Minton with his Art Nouveau designs.
Minton ceased operating as an independent company when it merged with Royal Doulton Tableware Ltd. in 1968. It was the end of an era, but not the end of widespread appreciation for Minton ceramics.
In 1982, the ”English Majolica” exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum featured 75 Minton pieces. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art reopened its British Galleries in 2020, it included a display of three colorful Minton majolica bird sculptures. Minton pottery was also on display from September 2021 to January 2022, along with other English pottery, at the Bard Graduate Center’s ”Majolica Mania” exhibition.

With porcelain vessels in the iconic Sèvres cobalt blue, encased in lavish doré bronze armatures, this pair of Louis XVI-style urns epitomizes the masterful craftsmanship and refined beauty of the famed porcelain manufactory. Each urn is adorned with three finely chased caryatid figures joined by floral garlands, resting upon a reticulated circular gilt bronze base.
Since its founding in the 18th century, the Sèvres porcelain manufactory has been synonymous with the finest porcelain wares. Established under the patronage of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, the firm quickly became the official royal porcelain producer. Throughout the 19th century, Sèvres expanded its repertoire, designing distinct vase forms that ranged from neoclassical grandeur to Gothic delicacy.
These exceptional urns pay homage to Pierre Gouthière, one of the most renowned bronze artists of the preceding century. Appointed gilder to King Louis XV in 1767, Gouthière revolutionized metalwork, pioneering a gilding technique that achieved an exquisite matte finish. Similar caryatid figures appear on vases once owned by the Duke of Talleyrand, while similar mermaid motifs—prevalent in Gouthière’s work—can be found on a serpentine marble vase in the Louvre. These vases embody the grandeur of Louis XVI-style ornamentation, blending rich materials with impeccable detail.
