About the Item
A very rare and historically important Carstens Tönnieshof floor vase, model 115, designed between 1962 and 1964 by Gerda Heukeroth (decor) and Heinz Siery (form) — two of the most influential creative figures in post-war German ceramics.
This monumental piece exemplifies the innovative spirit of Carstens’ early 1960s output, a period marked by sculptural ambition, bold modernist experimentation, and an expanded artistic direction under Siery’s leadership.
Design by Heinz Siery (Form, ca. 1962/64)
Heinz Siery was Carstens’ most important form designer during the late 1950s and early 1960s, known for introducing large, architectural silhouettes and a more sculptural design language.
Model 115 is one of his signature large-format shapes:
a powerful, ovoid body with broad shoulders,
a subtly flaring neck,
and a stable, balanced foot engineered to support the vase’s substantial height.
Siery’s forms were intentionally conceived as interior architecture—objects with presence, weight, and a strong spatial impact. This vase is an outstanding example of that principle.
Decor by Gerda Heukeroth (Glaze/Pattern, ca. 1962/64)
Gerda Heukeroth was one of Carstens’ most innovative decoration designers of the era. Her work often fused expressive handwork with modern geometric abstraction, and this décor is one of her most striking achievements.
Heukeroth’s design here features:
Bold terracotta-colored panels arranged in an abstract geometric pattern around the entire vessel
Deeply textured, volcanic dark clay fields, providing rich contrast
Hand-incised linear scratchwork across the orange glazed areas, adding dynamic surface movement
A sophisticated interplay of matte and gloss finishes
This combination of rough, raw materiality with sharp, modernist geometry captures Heukeroth’s aesthetic at its peak.
Artistic and Historical Significance
The collaboration between Siery (form) and Heukeroth (decor) during 1962–64 is widely regarded as one of Carstens’ strongest creative periods. Their joint works—especially in large-scale formats—are extremely sought-after today and rarely survive in such fine condition.
The present piece is an especially scarce example due to:
the complex, labor-intensive decor
the large size (48 cm)
the short production window
and the difficulty of firing such massive sculptural forms without defects
The base bears the impressed form number 115, consistent with early 1960s production.
A museum-worthy work of German mid-century ceramic art, blending brutalist texture, modernist abstraction, and architectural form.
