Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978
About the Item
A wonderful example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency.
We love the potency of this very simple form - it has a powerful presence, connoting stillness, composure. For some reason it makes me think of the moon. It has the same still, calm, abiding presence.
Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years.
He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay.
He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery. Work may be signed 'S. Inoue' and he also has a Japanese character as a mark.
Note, there is a small nibble to glaze on the left upper rim, indicated in images, and one equally insignificant to the ridge at front of the vase, also shown in images.
Please note, this vase was part of a functional collection, actively used for Ikebana flower arrangement and display. For forty-three years it has lasted through everyday use. It is in very good condition.
This is one of many exceptional vessels sourced from the Roseby collection.
The Roseby collection includes ceramics, glass, drawings, paintings and furniture, dating from the core of the late mid century, from the 1960s through to the 1980s. The collection was acquired over several decades of travel and collecting, by a discerning Melbourne art collector with a particular interest in the study, practice and teaching of Ikebana. The collection represents an important array of vases and vessels, many on a grand scale.
