About the Item
Part of Richard Haining's STACKED Collection, this wooden vessel is made from reclaimed oak. The salvaged wood offcuts were sourced from a variety of local Brooklyn wood shops, as well as from deconstructed turn of the century mill and factory buildings from the Northeast. The oxidized finish highlights tones ranging from shades of warm deep browns to almost black; there is no "stain" involved.
This vessel was hand-built with tiny blocks of wood; each block being carefully placed to create the desired shape. Once built, the exterior is gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand tools achieving a polished surface with subtle undulations similar to that of hand-built ceramics.
The salvaged wood offers one-of-a-kind patterns brought to life by Richard’s STACKED process, achieving a quality reminiscent of both basketry and mosaic tile work. Upon request, additional “candid/studio” images can be made available.
As with all of Richard’s STACKED work, the entirety of this piece was built, sculpted, and finished entirely by his hands.

Richard Haining
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
