About the Item

It is a jar from the middle of the Muromachi period (1400s), which is older than the Edo period. This pot is a pottery called "Shigaraki ware". Shigaraki ware is a historic kiln located in Shiga prefecture, Japan. Shiga prefecture is next to Kyoto in Japan. The red circle on the Japanese map is the location of the Shigaraki ware kiln. It is said to have originated around the 8th century. There are 6 kilns with a long history that still continue in Japan, It is one of them. Various types of pottery were baked here, especially many pots. The characteristic of Shigaraki ware is that feldspar (white pebbles) is mixed in the clay. Feldspar melts and becomes like white polka dots when baked at high temperatures. In addition, most Shigaraki ware jars are baked in a glossy state with natural glaze. However, some feldspars do not melt and are dull. That is Shigaraki ware like this item. Perhaps it was burned in a place where the temperature of the kiln was low. Feldspar remains as pebbles. The skin looks like cracks. However, Shigaraki in such a state rarely exists. Japanese people feel beauty in such an atmosphere of wabi-sabi. Even today, such vases are very popular in Japan. Also, the maximum diameter is slightly at the top, and the diameter gets smaller from there downwards, which is a characteristic of old Shigaraki ware. It is also beautiful that the diameter of the tip is small. Please decorate this at the entrance. Also, since the clay is coarse, it will leak out when water is added. When decorating a flower, put water in another container and put it in the jar. This is a highly recommended item. Also, as a reference, we have posted a photo of a Shigaraki ware vase from the same period that has been exhibited at a Japanese art museum in the past. Weight: 7kg.
