Yayık Küpü (Turkish Buttermilk Pot - Large)

About the Item

This large jug was used to store yogurt, butter, cheese, or Ayran: a hydrating yogurt drink frequently enjoyed alongside Turkish meals. “Yayık” pottery is specifically designed to churn, store, and preserve dairy products. The round shape and tight neck allows the butter to be agitated well, without spilling over. The small hole at the neck is removes overpressure while churning and creates an easy pour. For ages, women in rural Anatolian households have gathered to churn butter together. The process is rooted in three simple elements: cream, motion, and transformation. The traditional churning technique is time-consuming, and you can taste the love in the delicious final products. The Northern Turkish town of Tokat, where this küp was created, is known for producing beautiful pottery, rich textiles, and fine wine. High above the village, a citadel called the Ottoman Fortress boasts 28 towers. This is also the place where Julius Caesar uttered his famous words "Veni, Vidi, Vici" or “I came, I saw, I conquered.” *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
