Aren’t they stunning? We certainly think so. They have a fabulous pyramid or conical shaped solid glass base with a lovely teardrop bubble detail in the center of the pyramid and a half circle cupped opening adequate for that perfect scoop of deliciousness or splash of beverage. They will be the perfect addition to your dry bar, China cabinet, or at the breakfast nook filled with orange juice or your drink of choice. They have a simple, stunning design and exude Mid-Century Modern and Scandinavian Modern excellence!!! Bent Severin was a Danish artist, architect, and designer born in 1925. He was famously known for designing hotels in Singapore and Asia Pacific from 1972 until he later moved his design team to San Francisco. He designed “The Princess Line” which was mold blown glassware with a tall conical solid foot with a flat base with a tear shaped bubble in the center, for Holmegarrd from 1957 until it was discontinued in 1973. Bent Severin passed away in 2012. The history of Holmegaard Glassworks is as interesting and unique as their beautiful glass. It all began when permission was eventually granted by the King of Denmark to Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsoe to build a glass factory. The Count’s request was prompted by the King’s decision to tax imported glass. Unfortunately, permission came too late for the Count by coming two years after his death. But it did not come too late for his forward thinking and ahead of her times widow, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsoe. So, in 1825 Henriette built and began running a glass factory in the bogs of Holmegaard. The bogs were full of peat which could provide the fuel needed to supply the extreme heat required to blow glass. The Countess knew nothing of glass making, which was a running theme through Holmegaard history so stay tuned. But she ignited a fire which became successful and profitable business in her 18 years as its leader and which extended for the next 100 years when an artistic and design revolution hit Holmegaard in the person of their newest leader, Jacob E. Bang. Bang, like Henriette, knew nothing about glass production. But under his supervision the company stormed the Scandinavian glass design world from 1925 till his retirement in 1942. Next came Per Lutken to the helm, who, following suit knew nothing about glass in the beginning but may have become the most successful and prolific leader to date. He remained till his death in 1998. In the 1960s none other than Jacob Bang’s son, Michael Bang, joined Per to lead the company during their most successful decades. Bang, Lutken, and Bang according to some sources are deemed the creative trinity that brought Danish glass design to the world. Lesia Zuk joined Holmegaard in 2008, and you got it, with no glass making knowledge. She helped keep Holmegaard afloat until they were purchased by Rosendahl, a Danish design company, who owns and runs them today. Holmegaard has been creating quality glassware for almost two centuries. The legendary glassworks has collaborated with scores of celebrated designers over its long history, including Arne Jacobsen, Louise Campbell, Bodil Kjær and many others, with each artisan crafting vases, bottles and other serveware and decorative objects that are widely loved by collectors and art connoisseurs alike. Today Holmegaard is a powerhouse of functionalist modern Danish glass design.

Holmegaard Glassworks was the dream of Danish Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe, who petitioned the king of Denmark for permission to build a factory. Sadly, by the time permission was granted, the count had passed away, leaving his dowager, the Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe, to carry on her late husband’s dream in 1825. The factory was established in the town of Fensmark in the Holmegaard bog, where rich peat could be harvested and used to fuel the high-temperature kilns required to produce glass there.

The factory initially produced only simple mouth-blown green glass packaging bottles — the need was for glassware that was merely functional. It wasn’t until the 1920s that it made progress as a significant entity in the world of design. There was a fruitful partnership to create dinner glassware with the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory and glass artist Oluf Jensen. This was followed in 1925 by Holmegaard’s hiring Jacob Eiler Bang as the glassworks’ first in-house designer.

Bang was trained as an architect and was working on the Danish Pavilion at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts — the fair that brought the Art Deco style to worldwide attention — when his efforts caught the attention of Holmegaard. Bang believed in the concept of making things that were “beautiful, strong, practical and cheap.” His seductive, functionalist designs for vases, decanters, bottles and other objects — guided by the theories that underpin Scandinavian modernism — garnered acclaim for both Bang and Holmegaard, and he became known as one of the fathers of functionalism in Danish glassware.

Holmegaard went on to work with Per Lütken, who created intricate objects that redefined the factory’s style and Danish glass design as a whole. Lütken produced over 3,000 pieces for the glassworks, including the revered Provence bowl, one of the pieces for which the glassworks is best known. The brand went on to work with other notable artists including Otto Brauer and Jacob Bang’s son, Michael Bang, whose Palet range, Fontaine wine glass range, and Mandarin lamps are among Holmegaard’s most iconic creations.

Today, Holmegaard Glassworks is owned by Rosendahl Design Group. It is Denmark’s largest manufacturer of glass in addition to being the oldest and most historic.
