Westerwald stoneware jug with pewter lid

About the Item

This intricately detailed Westerwald stoneware beer jug is encircled with a central band of portraits of figures in medieval dress, with more decoration above and below. The backgrounds to these decorations are a rich cobalt blue, and the blue with the grey stoneware is offset with bands of manganese. The pewter lid is inset with a similarly incricate and coloured mount. The makers number on the base - 917 - points to the factory of Simon Peter Gerz of Hohr, then in Prussia. The jug stands 330 mm (13 inches) high, and has a diameter of 152 mm (6 inches). The only blemish is a 6 mm (.25 of an inch) diameter chip to the bottom edge of the foot. It would date to around 1890.
