Earthenware Tea Canister with Pewter Lid

About the Item

This pottery tea canister is decorated with very detailed, and quite pronounced, applied sprigs of fruit, flowers, leaves and butterflies, and there is a slight iridescence to the glaze. It is capped with a screw on pewter lid which has a very delicate diaper pattern to the shoulder. There is a ring of flowers to the shoulder of the canister, and a ring of beads to the foot. The piece stands 167 mm (6.5 inches) high, and has a diameter of 97 mm (3.75 inches). Apart from some faint crazing and a 4 mm (3/8ths of an inch) long split to the lid, it is in very good condition. There are no makers marks on the body and no touch marks on the pewter. Possibly Dutch, it would date from the early 1700's.
