Doulton Burslem Gladstone Commemorative Jug

About the Item

This Doulton Burslem jug was issued in 1898 to commemorate the death of William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). Gladstone was an English politician who served as Prime Minister on four occasions. Made of parian, a type of porcelain, and given a vellum coloured ground, it features a portrait of Gladstone on one side and a hand tinted replica of his coat of arms on the other, and finished off with gilding to the rim and base. It would appear that the jug was designed some time before Gladstone's death as both the Registered number (Rd. 233136) and the Doulton pattern number (C 6165) were issued in around 1894 or 1895. The Ra number (RA 1213) shows that the jug was designed in the Robert Allen studio and again this ties in with the dates above. The jug stands 183 mm (7.25 inches) high and has a diameter of 122 mm (4.75 inches). It is in excellent condition.
