Doulton Burslem Spanish Ware painted plate
About the Item
This porcelain plate from Doulton Burslem is from Doulton's "Spanish Ware" range with hand painted poppies done using a lovely soft palette, then outlined in gold on a pink ground with a painted background. The decorator's mark is either WH or HW. This type of ware was developed by John Slater and, although it was considered a new and unusual decoration for the time, it remained popular from the early 1880's into the early 1900's. "Spanish Ware" has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book "The Doulton Burslem Wares"as "featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground". This plate measures 228 mm (9 inches) in diameter and stands 20 mm (.75 of an inch) high. It is in good condition, with only some very minor rubbing of the gilding to the rim and the loss of a small part of the main stem that can be seen in the main photo. It dates from the period 1884-90.
