Tapio Wirkkala's "Jaansaro" or "Iceblock" bowl # 3847 by Iittala
This is Tapio Wirkkala's "Jaansaro" or "Iceblock" bowl # 3847 by Iittala. It can be found in "Tapio Wirkkala: Eye, Hand & Thought" on pages 150 & 300. It is a still mould blown crystal form with assymetric faceted sides and a hand hammered rim. Production was limited to very few examples. The piece is in excellent condition with virtually no signs of wear. It is incised one the bottom "TAPIO WIRKKALA" "3847". The lack of a date indicates that this is a first year production piece from 1951. Wirkkala pieces were dated only in the years following after the first year of production. The design inspiration comes from the assymetric chunks of arctic ice found in Wirkkala's homeland of Finland. Along with the "iceberg" collection, these pieces are some of his most sought after works.
