    One of world's greatest achievements in Art Deco artisanry, the famed "Europa and the Bull" spherical bowl was designed by Sidney Waugh and executed by the Steuben Glass division of corning glass in the 1930s. Waugh had been hired by Steuben as its chief designer in 1933, and over the next 20 years he designed a wide array of bowls, vases and other glass objects that were decorated with high-style Art Deco figures executed via copper-wheel engraving. Arthur Amory Houghton, grandson of the founder of Corning, took the Steuben division in a new and modern direction when he hired John Monteith Gates to be its managing director and Waugh to be its first designer. Steuben became known as one of the globe's great modern glass companies, and from the 1930s-1950s, Steuben rivaled Orrefors in Sweden and Lobmeyr in Austria for the finest engraved Art Deco glass work...
