Aesthetic Movement Whieldon Glazed Maiden Pottery Snuff Bottle
About the Item
An unusual antique pottery vessel molded with maiden’s heads and decorated in Whieldon glazes dating from the 19th century. Possibly a spill vase or table snuff bottle the vessel is hand-crafted and made in red terracotta clay and is formed on a shaped oval unglazed base and is molded as two young maiden’s heads back to back with a central raised opening. The body of the vessel is molded with flowing hair with flowers and the vessel is decorated in brown, yellow and green drip glazes over a cream colored ground. The base is marked with painted initials TOR.
An interesting and unusual piece.
Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market.
In good condition with natural age crazing to the glazed finish and some natural making flaws under the glaze.
