About the Item

This is a beautiful pair of very decorative, Porcelain hand painted Desert Plates by John Ridgway, of Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire Potteries, England, dating to the George 1Vth / William IVth period of the early 19th century, circa 1825 to 1830. The plates are rectangular with a wavy rim and two moulded handles to either side. Each plate has been carefully hand painted with a different country scene with two people fishing by a river, marked to the base pattern 1054. The outer rim has been hand gilded. A similar plate is illustrated in Geoffrey Godden's book , New Guide to English Porcelain, page 174, plate 211. Overall a beautiful pair of early hand painted porcelain plates.
