Goldscheider Vienna figurine Till Fulenspiegel: Jester with Owl Designed by Josef Lorenzl (1892 - 1950) / one of the most important designers having been active for Goldscheider manufactory in period of 1920-1940 / designed 1923-1924. Made circa 1925-1930 model number 5193 / 108 / 2 Hallmarked: Goldscheider Wien (= VIENNA) earlier stamp mark / painter's sign visible, too. Subject: A figure of a jester being identified Till Eulenspiegel / the man wears a clown's costume with a fool's cap / he lifts an owl's figurine seeming to reprove it. The figurine sits on black socle. Till Eulenspiegel was an impudent trickster figure originating in Middle Low German folklore. His tales were disseminated in popular printed editions narrating a string of lightly connected episodes that outlined his picaresque career, primarily in Germany, the Low Countries and France. He made his main entrance in English- speaking culture late in the nineteenth century as "Owlglass", but was first mentioned in English literature by Ben Jonson in his comedic play The Alchemist.
