James Lovera, Stoneware Large Gray and Blue Bowl, USA, 1990's
About the Item
James Lovera , Stoneware Large gray and blue bowl, USA, 1990's Impressed "Lovera"
This is a large bowl by James Lovera, an American potter from California.
After studying sculpture in college, Lovera studied ceramics with Gertrude and Otto Nutzler, pioneers of American ceramics, and taught ceramics, design, and textiles at San Jose State University while working as an assistant professor there.
The oriental simplicity of the forms and glazes, which seem to have been influenced by Mr. and Mrs. Natzler, are characterized by their shiny skin and soft, undulating forms, as if they were made of plastic.
The piece is very interesting because it seems to be an expression of ceramics made of a new material, or perhaps an image of plastic bent by heat, like the furniture of Mr. and Mrs. Eames, who were prosperous in California at the time.
The potter's wheel is made of black-colored clay, and the bowl is surprisingly light for its size, giving the impression of a new ceramic art that would have been welcomed with surprise at the time. The mouth rim is slightly edge-warped on the outside and very deep on the inside, and the foot ring is squeezed smaller than the body. The gray and indigo glazes are applied, but they blend with each other, creating a magnificent and beautiful scene inside and out, like the Northern Lights or the stars in the night sky.
The vessel has been examined by an expert by UV light and visual inspection to ensure that there are no repairs and that it is not twice kiln fired.

- Sven Wejesfelt, Large Blue and Red Stoneware Bowl , Gustavsberg, Sweden 1991By Sven WejsfeltLocated in Tokyo, 13Sven Wejesfelt, Large bowl with a glossy glaze of mixed blue and red, Gustavsberg , Sweden 1991 Impressed "Swen" "G (hand) " UNIK 91. This is a large size bowl piece by Sven Wejesfelt, an artist who worked at the Gustavsberg Pottery in Sweden. Wejesfelt worked as a wheelwright at Rorstrand from 1946-53 before moving to Gustavsberg in 1953. He worked as a wheelwright for Stig Lindberg for a long time, and in 1974 he became the Art Director of Gustavsberg. He is a rare Scandinavian artist who throws, glazes, and fires all of his own work, and is famous in Sweden as the second most famous potter after Berndt Friberg. He continued to make pottery until his death in 2009, and in his final years he sold his glazes and recipes. This large bowl is entirely covered with a bright red cinnabar glaze, which is then covered with a double layer of bright blue glaze, blending with each other. The bright blue glaze is covered with a fine white furrow that gives it a vivid and lively appearance, as if oil paints had just been applied to it. The cinnabar glaze appears on the bottom and around the base, and the red of the prospective vase is particularly vivid. The contrast between the blue and red is so strong that it takes your breath away when you look into the vase. The glaze is slightly viscous, and when you touch it with your finger, it is raised, giving an uneven surface. This piece was exhibited in the exhibition "Modernism and Mingei: Nordic Ceramics...Category
