CHARLES CATTEAU (1880, DOUAI-1966, NICE)
Born at Douai, Charles Catteau trained at the National Ceramics School in Sèvres and followed a training course at the National Porcelain Factory in the same town. In 1904, Catteau was hired by the German Nymphenburg Porcelain Factory, near Munich.
In December 1906 he moved to La Louvière with his small family and worked for Boch Frères Keramis, a Belgian earthenware factory located in La Louvière since the 19th Century. It is unclear whether Anna Boch introduced Catteau into the La Louvière factory. The two artists had known each other since Munich. Catteau immediately became a member of Anna Boch's "Kring Der Vrienden Der Schone Kunsten" (= Circle of Friends of The Fine Arts).
In 1907 he was appointed head of the decoration department and Workshop of imaginative Design, where he remained until 1948.
BOCH FRÉRES KERAMIS
A Belgian ceramic company that was known for its Cloisonné techniques, early 20th-century Art Deco styles, and use of black outlined designs. The company’s name, “Keramis,” was derived from keramos, the ancient Greek word for pottery. Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. Decades later in 1906, French ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company as artistic director, a position he held for 42 years. His signature Art Deco designs were influenced by Japonisme, Cubism, and abstraction of nature, and he was ultimately responsible for the company’s transition from producing utilitarian objects to esteemed works of art. Boch Frères Keramis closed down in 1985, and though they were acquired by other companies afterwards, they closed permanently in 2009.
