About the Item

Celadon-colored collector's plate featuring an illustration by Gustave Léonce, depicting eggs and chicks. The edges of the plate are scalloped with a woven effect border. Discover this magnificent collector's plate, a true gem in the history of English ceramics. Designed in 1878 by the talented artists Gustave Léonce and Pierre Mallet for the prestigious Minton pottery, this plate embodies the refinement and innovation of the Aesthetic Movement of the 19th century. Manufactured in Staffordshire, England, this plate is made of celadon blue-green earthenware. Its design features fine black engraved lines, depicting eggs and chicks. This asymmetrical and naturalistic design is typical of the period, combining the aesthetic influence of the 19th century with an innovative approach. This piece is in exceptional condition for its age. There is a small chip on the front edge, but it does not detract from the plate's beauty and a little crazing (pictures). Light utensil marks on the surface, consistent with its historical use. The back of the plate is marked with the Minton globe, used between 1863 and 1872, as well as the inscription "MINTON" and the cypher (a ring in a triangle) confirming the year of manufacture, 1878. This rare piece is similar to one held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, although the version presented here is unpainted and features scalloped edges. This plate is not just a utilitarian object; it tells a story and represents a precious piece of 19th-century artistic heritage. It would be a remarkable addition to any collection of antique ceramics or a centerpiece in a wall display of illustrated ceramics. Acquire this rare and exceptional plate from the Minton pottery, and be captivated by its elegance and rich history.
