About the Item

MOON HEAD VASE (GAIA SERIES) - CATHRINE RABEN DAVIDSEN SALT FIRED STONEWARE ABOUT THE GAIA SERIES Cathrine presents a series of clay pot vases, vessels and urns inspired by prehistoric Mexican terracotta, German Bellarmine stoneware from the 16th and 17th centuries and facemask urns from the late Bronze Age. The glazes used in some of the clay pots have been treated with oxides, while others have undergone salt glaze and raku firings. Some of these vessels were used as occult witch bottles with the purpose of expelling evil spirits. By playfully adapting this stylistic expression to her own clay pots, Cathrine introduces the association to the ghostly and spiritual in her work, surrounding the old tradition with a modern mystique. The ceramics evoke a sense of artifacts or anthropological objects and recall the lost rites and mysterious religious ceremonies of our ancestors – like relics whose meaning has been lost in time. By intuitively combining disparate pieces of knowledge taken from ritual practices, animistic belief systems, scientific research, anthropology, philosophy, etc., Cathrine explores the holistic connections having shaped relations of belief for millenniums. Questioning the dualisms between nature and culture, physical and metaphysical, material and spiritual, realversus fiction, she asks how these relations can be examined once again in the modern society of our time. The title GAIA comes from Ancient Greek and is a poetical form of land or earth.
