About
These are a beautiful pair of Mason's ironstone large Dinner Plates made during the mid-19th century, when Mason's was owned by Ashworth Brothers, circa 1870.
The plates have a very detailed Chinoiserie pattern depicting a central octagonal panel, with large flowers and Chinese precious things. The rim has a brilliant mazarine blue border with much gold gilded detail with three pairs of panels, two containing flowers and the other pairs with people. This pattern is called " Octagonal Panel of Flowers" and is fully illustrated on page 153 of A Guide To Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The pattern would have been printed onto each plate and then hand painted and hand gilded in great detail with various bold colours.
Both plates have a puce printed mark to the reverse; Real Ironstone China, with a Mason's crown above and A. Bros. below the crown. There is also an impressed mark and a hand painted B 1857 and painters mark. The marks are recorded Mason's / Ashworth's marks and are shown on Page 192 of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wears, published by The Antique Collectors' club.
The hand painted and gilded detail on these plates is some of the best we have seen.
Please note that one plate shows as slightly lighter than the other which was due to the light conditions and light direction when taking the images. In practise they are the same depth and shade of colour.
