Faenza Italian Ceramic Centerpiece Tray Hand Painted Decoration "Garofano"
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Ceramic centerpiece from Faenza (Italy); it has been skilfully hand-painted with the "Garofano" decoration; this type of decoration is a "chinoiserie" and was produced for the first time in 1767 by the Feriani Factory in Faenza, a great protagonist in the history of ceramics from 1693 to 1893; represents an imaginary oriental garden in bloom, with a blue lawn, and in the center, the "Carnation of the Indies", re-elaborated according to the ceramic tradition of Faenza; the strong polychromatic suggestion has made this decoration famous all over the world and still today, after more than two centuries of history, it is one of the most fascinating and requested collections. Our centerpiece was not produced in one of the many factories in Faenza that produce hundreds of them, but by a single person, Marinella Melandri, an expert and skilled artist painter who had her own small studio and workshop in the center of Faenza; perhaps a relative of the more famous Pietro Melandri, the great Faentine ceramist of the early 1900s, Marinella Melandri was considered a refined decorator, a Master of Art in hand-painting precious ceramics, rich in spirit and creativity; clearly her production was very limited but of very high quality and in great demand by an elite of customers; our centerpiece created between 1975 and 1979 is entirely hand made and hand-painted following the tradition of Faenza Majolica...

Antique and Vintage Delft and Faience

The unique graceful design and classic style of antique and vintage delft and faience make these pieces an exceptional addition to any dining room.

The popularity of the blue-and-white porcelain developed in 14th-century China inspired delft and faience pottery in Europe. The global expansion of trade through the Dutch East India Company led to the import of numerous examples of Chinese porcelain, resulting in the creation of Dutch delftware, which is the term generally used to describe the tin-glazed earthenware that Dutch potters used. There were other imitations of Chinese porcelain produced by ceramicists throughout Europe, but delftware was the most successful. This iconic tradition — the subject of a 2020 exhibition at the Kunstmuseum den Haag — resembled Chinese porcelain but was more affordable.

True blue delftware originates only from a single location: Delft in the Netherlands. These precious pieces pair well with French faience. Unlike delftware, French faience utilizes a lead-and-tin glaze. This earthenware has roots in late-16th-century France. French Provincial delft and faience tend to feature snow-white lacquered surfaces with colorful painted images or floral designs.

In terms of elegance and versatility, Baroque delft and faience always impress. The most extravagant and boldly hued pieces are Rococo delft and faience. Plates, tureens and other objects made in this style are frequently ornate and intricately decorated, making them ideal for display.

Modern Dutch design masters often incorporate vintage decor into their contemporary designs and delftware items are a popular choice. Browse antique and vintage delft and faience now on 1stDibs.
