Blue and white tobacco jar ‘No. 12’ Delft, 1750-1800 The Lampet Jug pottery Mark: LPKan The ovoid tobacco jar has a protruding rim and is painted in blue with a large oval depicting Fortuna. To her left is a tobacco jar, to her right a closed barrel. A three-master sails on the background left. Below Fortuna is a cartouche inscribed 'No 12'. A bow is painted on the top of the oval, on the bottom on both sides ribbons are draped over the edge. The Netherlands imported large quantities of tobacco in the 18th century, which was processed here for consumption. Amsterdam in particular was an important centre in the tobacco trade. The large tobacco jars were displayed in tobacco shops where their customers could choose from many different tobacco varieties. The type of tobacco or place of origin are often indicated on the tobacco jars. Dimensions: height 30,5 cm / 12 in., diameter 25,5 cm / 10.03 in. Condition: wear and enamel loss at top and bottom rim.
