Largest and Mint Antique Delftware Porcelain Wall Tile Painting in Wooden Frame

About the Item

Stunning and largest ever single tile, Delft Blue wall painting in the 'Haagse School' style. This antique and largest ever, single Delftware tile holds both the art of painting and the art of making glazed ceramic tiles and the amazing result is an absolute joy to own and to look at. This serene, realistic and truly Dutch landscape scene was the typical subject matter of what later became known as the famous 'The Hague School Style'. The painting on this tile was done by one of the great artists that worked for only the best ceramic studios in those days and the original of this painting was created by one of the greats of the 'Haagse School', Louis Apol (1850-1936). It is for that reason that this unique size tile with painting also is signed 'naar L. Apol' which means 'after L. Apol'. We have attributed this one of a kind antique to 'De Porceleyne Fles', but this could also have been made by one of the other two of the top three ceramic studios / manufacturers of that era. Those other two were 'Rozenburg' of the Hague and 'Holland Utrecht' of Utrecht. If you are Dutch and you have been born and raised here (like we have) then it is impossible to not love this work of art. This piece is like the archetype of Dutch culture, because it embodies our landscape (with a windmill), our long and renowned history of painting AND our famous history of ceramic manufacturing. And looking at this piece it always makes us realize that this archetypical scene actually exists below sea level. What makes this painting extra special for the connoisseurs is the fact that there are no trash cans, no bicycles, no cars, no lampposts etc in sight. This was Holland at its purest and that is exactly what had made (and still makes) this 'the Hague School Style' so very much sought after. This unique and mint, tableau-size, white tile with its amazing shades of blue is in a rather plain wooden frame, but this frame is in fact the perfect choice for this work of art. A plain frame like this makes the centerpiece (the stunning and large hand-painted tile) truly come out in its full glory. Thanks to a metal wire on the back, mounting this museum worthy work of fine art on the wall will take no time at all. So if you are Dutch or if you have Dutch ancestors and you like this unique work of art as much as we do then maybe you (and your family) should be the next custodian(s) of this historically interesting, original, superb condition and highly decorative antique. Mind you, our fair price for this one of a kind antique even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth: 29.9 x 22.6 x 2.4 inches. Height x width of the truly large tile alone: 23.6 x 16 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

  • Rare Dutch Church Interior Rozenburg Porcelain Tile Painting After J. Bosboom
    By Rozenburg Porcelain
    Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful large tile painting of a Gothic church interior by W.B. van Horssen (1863-1931). We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around. Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...
