Antique Raised Gold Dresden Dinner Plate Set: 10, Exotic Birds

I'm usually partial to the French and English maker's plates, it's true, but this set is remarkable! A set of 10 matching but hand painted dinner plates, or chargers, over 10.5" in diameter, and in remarkably fine condition throughout. They're accented in fine hand-applied raised gold enamel, giving them that 'jewel-like' look we just love on the table or as decorator plates. Painted exotic pheasants alternate with butterflies, in a brilliant palette, set off perfectly by the raised gold rim and sectioning that borders the plates. The interiors are painted, as well, with a vignette of woodlands, and 2 birds in each. The plate blanks are, we believe, Dresden hard paste porcelain. The hand painted decorations are signed by W. Shoppe, and the only mark we can follow is the gold mark on back. The most notable maker mark done in this way is typically a dresden mark, but this is different.I have not found this particular gold mark, though several of the Dresden makers used similar gold enamel marks. They're painted in the Meissen or Vienna style, and likely date late 1800s.

Very good to excellent condition, they have obviously been cabinet plates and not used at table unless as place plates, lifted when the first course is served on other plates. They are highly decorative, and have no utensil marks or scrapes. There is one plate that has a very small rim chip, about 1/8" or less. Otherwise, they are remarkably unscathed by time. Raised gold enhances the hand painted plates, as noted, and little (if any) is disturbed in the generous gold on these 10 plates.
