About the Item

A set of six French rebus puzzle dessert plates, transfer printed in black on a white earthenware body. When solved, the picture puzzle spells out a wise saying or maxim, 19th century. From the early 1800s-early 1900s, most French homes had a set of rebus dessert plates. Solving the puzzle provided entertainment and conversation to the table after a traditionally long meal. The solution to each puzzle is printed on the verso of the plate. A double band of French blue lining borders a raised shell form embossed rim with the rebus in the center of the plate, circa 1841-1876, marked Creil et Montereau. Excellent to very good conditions for the age. Light signs of wear to the surface, some minor rough rims as can be expected, typical of faïence. No chipping or hairlines, structurally sound.
