About the Item

French Haviland Limoges dinner and dessert service, the rims painted with delicate scrolling gilding to the borders, enclosing, paintings of fruit or floral specimens, the covers molded with acorns, picked out in gilding, unmarked, circa 1845. The service comprises: • Soup tureen and cover, 13 1/2 inches by 12 inches, which fits on the largest serving dish, measuring 17 1/2 inches by 13 inches, all floral decorated. • Vegetable tureen and cover, fits on medium sized platter. • Sauce tureen and cover. • Deep dish ovular bowl and two smaller similar bowls in sizes. • 35 dinner plates, 9 inches diameter, with floral painting. • 24 dessert plates, 8 1/4 inches diameter, with floral painting. • Eight soup plates, - 9 3/4 inches diameter, with floral painting. • 18 dessert plates painted with fruit. • Nine coffee cups, painted with flowers. • 22 cup plates, 5 inches diameter, painted with flowers. • 17 saucer dishes, 5 1/8 inches diameter, painted with flowers. • Three small oval serving dishes, painted with flowers. • One gravy underplate, one diamond gravy plate and a gravy boat to fit, painted with flowers. Total items: 150. Condition: Soup tureen cover cracked, some plates with chips and/or hairlines. The service has been in the same family since 1850-1855, when it was acquired on a tour abroad. Susan Elizabeth Roe married Samuel Brewster Caldwell in October, 1849. Mrs. Roe left a notebook for her children in which she referred to the travels she and her husband took to the British Isles and the Continent during the Civil War. They travelled with their daughter, who was about five at the time. The porcelain was acquired during this trip and was left to the couple's daughter thence by descent. Please note, because of the extensive size of this service, it may take two extra days to package it and organize delivery.
