About the Item
A stunning antique Bohemian ruby flash glass goblet finely decorated with various hunting scenes attributed to Carl Günther and dating between 1860 and 1880.
In their 1990 catalogue Glass of 5 Centuries, Glass Gallery Michael Kovacek presented a series of important signed pieces in this technique and discussed the tortured life of Carl Günther. After a visit to Paris seeking work from major glassworks including Baccarat, Günther returned to Munich in 1844, was arrested and deported to his hometown of Steinschönau. He suffered from a religious mania and for a while even lived in a cave, setting up his glass engraving tools in the middle of the forest where he carved the trees and animals he saw around him. Günther developed a new technique mixing ruby staining with hydrofluoric acid. Sadly he earned little money peddling his distinctive glass in the streets of Prague and he died penniless and half blind in Steinschönau in 1883.
The goblet stands on a wide round red stained glass foot with tall stem with a clear round tall glass bowl with decorative patterned borders around the upper and lower edges with the area inbetween delicately etched with a huntsman with his dog and holding a hunting horn, another hunter gallops on horseback with further vignettes with stags, dogs, game and water birds with a small seated boy playing a flute and set amidst two scroll designs. The edges and foot are applied with a yellow slip pattern. The glass has a rough snapped off makers pontil mark and is not marked however retains an old collector’s paper label to the rim.
