About the Item
An extremely rare & robust pair of Irish Georgian Cork Glass Company wine carafes.
Both of mallet form decorated with basal cut flutes & engraved swags rising to feathered triple ring necks.
The undersides of their bases bearing moulded factory marks for Cork Glass Company
(The Cork Glass Company produced wares for a relatively brief period of time, from 1783-1818).
The diameter of the mouths of these vessels are proportionally much larger than those belonging to traditional sized decanters, this combined with the absence of the necks having a ground interior surface, strongly supports the fact that these vessels were never intended to have stoppers. They are instead carafes, also referred to as 'table water bottles', and after being filled they would have been brought to the table or the sideboard to be poured immediately with the meal, thereby not requiring the need for stoppers.
Both remain in fine overall condition, and are priced competitively in comparison to similar examples in the marketplace, which appear to be none, as no comparative examples of either the form or the cutting have been found during the course of research.
