Moser Bohemian Art Nouveau Hand Cut 'Roses' Pattern Decanter and Two Glasses

About

A magnificent Art Nouveau large green to clear, hand-cut and gilded decanter and two matching glasses by Moser. Part of a suite purchased In August 1912 from the world-famous retail shop - J & L Lobmeyr of Vienna. This glass suite is in the Moser ‘Rose’ pattern (prod no 7000 –des.1902) in green to clear, hand intaglio cut (Ectentiefgravur) with wild roses and finely gilded. To quote Jan Mergl in the Moser book (1997), ‘This is the artistically most perfect set of the Art Nouveau period... The unique shape imitating a flower’s calyx and composition and the execution of the engraving created a certain unity which reflected the decorative character of applied arts at the time’. The last photo shows a copy of the original receipt (for the full suite) from Lobmeyr (the original receipt itself no longer exists -but a photocopy will be included with the set). This is possibly the most graceful pattern of the period, hand-cut to incredible detail by the master cutters at Moser (This Ectentiefgravur technique was first shown at the 1900 Paris exhibition). The Moser glassworks, owned and run originally by Ludwig Moser, opened in 1857 in Karlsbad (now Kalory Vary in the Czech Republic) Ludwig was often known as the ‘Glassmaker of Kings’ the factory is still in production today. J & L Lobmeyr is a unique store, founded in 1823 and is still in its original position and family ownership on Vienna's chic Kärntnerstrasse. German and Austro-Hungarian Art Nouveau Hock glasses have always been avidly collected, other key makers include Theresienthal, Meyrs Neffe and Fritz Heckert, but they never quite achieved the fine detail and beauty of the best of Moser. Decanter is 9 cms across (foot) and 44 cms tall with the stopper and 33 cms tall without stopper, glasses are 23 cms tall and 8 cms wide(foot).

About J.L Lobmeyr (Retailer)

The venerable Austrian firm J. & L. Lobmeyr is one of the world’s premier glassware makers and purveyors, noted especially for its lighting and tableware designs. Headquartered in Vienna, Lobmeyr has won numerous illustrious commissions in its nearly two centuries in business, including the chandeliers for the Hapsburg monarchy’s Schönbrunn Palace, the Lincoln Center home of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Lobmeyr is still family owned and managed. The company was founded by glass trader Josef Lobmeyr in 1823. It thrived during the long tenure of his son Ludwig, who built a network of manufacturers and artisanal workshops in Bohemia—central Europe’s revered glass-making region, now part of the Czech Republic—and earned imperial patronage. (He also collaborated with Thomas Edison to create the first electric chandelier, in 1883.) His nephew, Stefan Rath, who took over as head of Lobmeyr in 1917, introduced modernist design to the company repertoire, contracting with designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Otto Prutscher and Michael Powolny to create tableware.

Lobmeyr has never been married to a dominant in-house design type. The firm has produced chandeliers and sconces in styles as various as neo-Baroque, Rococo, neoclassical (or Louis XVI), Art Nouveau, minimalist and “sputnik” mid-century modern. As you will see from the offerings available on these pages, Lobmeyr can bring a sense of grandeur suitable to any décor.
