About the Item

This is a good hand-blown, Jacobite English, mid-Georgian, wine drinking glass with an engraved bowl and an opaque twist stem, dating from the middle of the 18th century, circa 1760. Jacobite glasses have historical significance and are very collectible. This glass is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey color with age related wear to both the rim of the bowl and to the foot rim as expected with over 250 years of use. The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny bubbles you would expect to see in 18th century glass which gives these glasses their unique charm. This glass has a round funnel (RF) bowl which has been hand engraved with the Jacobite symbols of a six petal rose and two buds either side of the rose. The bowl sits on a double series opaque or cotton twist stem, (DSOT) consisting of a pair of spiral threads outside a central vertical gauze. The stem leads to a good wide conical foot having a rough snapped off pontil mark to the underside. Jacobite glasses These were used by secret societies who supported the claim to the throne of the descendants of the Roman Catholic Stuart King, James 11 of England, who abdicated in 1688 in favour of the Protestants, William and Mary. These glasses are engraved with a variety of Stuart mottoes and emblems with the Jacobite symbol of the White Rose of York, representing the English crown. The buds beside the rose represent the pretenders; James 11 son, James Francis Edward Stuart, known as the Old Pretender and his son, Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender. There are no cracks or any evidence of restoration. Dimensions: Bowl rim diameter: 2.19 inches. Foot diameter: 2.94 inches. Height: 5.88 inches.
