About the Item

Scandinavian Modern Large Glass Fruit Bowl by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala in the Ultima Thule line. The footed bowl has textured sides that reference the northern icy terrain of Scandinavia. This large serving bowl is perfect for dessert, salad or appetizers. This 1960s design was meant to interpret the melting ice of a snow-covered Finnish island. The creation of this design was time consuming, taking hundreds of hours between Wirkkala and the Iittala glassblowers. The unique texture of the glass is created by a time-laboring technique that is created by the molten glass burning the surface of the wooden moulds. Finnair, the Finnish Airline, used Ultima Thule glassware for their First Class service in the 1960s. One can also see its use on the Finlandia Vodka bottles. Measures 7-1/2" diameter by 3-1/2" high. Very good to excellent condition. See separate listing for matching set of 12 small bowls.
