About the Item
A stunning and large Charles Brannam art pottery fish spout jug with low relief sgraffito designs of swimming fish by Frederick Braddon and dated 1896. The large red earthenware vase stands on a narrow flat round base with a bulbous shaped body with a pinched neck and trumpet shaped top. A twisted strap pouring handle is applied to the neck and upper body and a large fish with an open mouth forms a pouring spout. The body of the jug is further decorated with sgraffito patterning of two fish swimming amidst pond weeds, the decoration using the natural tones of the underlying red clay to form the outlines and incorporating elements of the natural glazed red coloring with yellow and blue painted tones. Similar styling is applied to the spout and the decoration is set against a green glazed ground. The jug has incised Ch Brannam marks to the base along with the date 1896. The jug also has a very feint FB underglazed incised mark for Frederick Braddon who was a prolific designer at CH Brannam at this time.
