George III Coffee or Water Jug made by Charles Wright in London in 1773
About the Item
This rare and beautiful George III Jug stands on a circular domed spreading foot which is chased with floral garlands. The main body is also chased with the same designs, bolder and more pronounced, and the garlands are tied with ribbons and tassels. The cast sparrow beak spout is decorated with foliate motifs and flower heads. The hinged domed cover terminates in a pyramid form finial, has a gadrooned rim and is chased with the same designs, as seen on the foot and the main body. This piece has its original wicker covered "S" scroll handle which is attached at the base with most beautiful cast lyre mouldings. The main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial with Crest above and Motto below, all surrounded by a crossed branch cartouche. This piece displays most unusual designs in the chasing and is in quite excellent condition. The Jug is fully marked in the foot and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the cover. The Arms are those of French, impaling Denton, for Fleming French of Ripple Vale, County Kent, and his first wife Sarah Denton.
