19th Century French Silver-Gilt Pair of Dishes, Odiot, circa 1890
About the Item
Antique late 19th Century French rare and important Empire style pair of solid silver dishes, each of circular form with very fine acanthus leaves borders and chased with a frieze of floral scrolls and laurel leaves, winged griffins facing towards masks, and flanked by roman style urns on a matted ground. The dishes raised on cast winged lion paw feet. Engraved with the initials MPF within a garland.
Each plate is hallmarked French silver (950 standard, used 1838-present), Paris, Marks for Odiot (Between 1894 and 1906 the company used the "PR Cie" with a lamp mark. This mark was for
the company formed by Gustave Odiot, Emile Provost and Paul Edouard Recipon), and inventory numbers.
La Maison Odiot, or House of Odiot was founded in 1690 by Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, fine silversmith during the reign of Louis XV. However it was with his grandson, Jean Baptiste Claude Odiot (born in 1763) that the firm reached its peak of notoriety, receiving exceptional commissions from Napoleon’s court and the most important Royal families of the world.
In 1802 the firm participated at the International Exposition de l’Industrie in Paris winning the gold medal. Soon after, Odiot succeeded Henry Auguste as Napoleon’s official silversmith and was commissioned both the sceptre and the sword for his coronation in 1804, two massive dinner services for Napoleon’s mother and sister and one for the Emperor’s campaigns.

Odiot
Founded in 1690 by silversmith Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, the house of Odiot became quickly known as one of the best gold and silver workshops in France, specializing in decorative objects and cutlery.
The company found early favor from the court of reigning French king Louis XV, which laid the groundwork for later success. Odiot achieved even more prominence under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Gaspard’s grandson, Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, who took over the family business as a master in 1785. Odiot landed high-profile commissions by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, which translated into additional commissions by other royal families across Europe.
In 1827, Jean-Baptiste Claude handed the company to his son, Charles Nicolas Odiot, who would serve as the official supplier to King Louis-Philippe I and the Orléans royal family. Charles Nicolas specialized in Rococo-style silverware. The next-generation Odiot master, Jean-Baptiste Gustave Odiot, became the official supplier of silver to the czar of Russia and managed the house’s largest order to date: a 3,000-piece set of solid-gold dinnerware for Sa’id Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt.
Today, Odiot continues to produce exemplary silver and gold wares, from decorative objects to flatware, upholding the fine standards of the centuries-old brand. Odiot works can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris.

In the South West of France, the country named Landes was a poor country having very few natural resources, the inhabitants lived on meager harvests whose land was manured by their flocks of sheep.
The Landais also exploited the resin of the maritime pine: it was collected at the foot of the tree using a very artisanal technique which offered low yields: tapping with “crot” (from the Gascon cròt: hole). To harvest the resin, ancient resin workers dug a hole at the foot of the pine, generally between the roots, which they lined with moss.
