A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver serving dish with cover made by Robert Garrard II; an addition to dining silverware collection This magnificent antique Victorian sterling silver dish has a rounded hexagonal form. The body of the serving dish is plain and embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of on a cap of maintenance turned up a lion passant*. The plain body is encompassed with a cast and applied rosette border to the rim, accented with a leaf decorated corner pieces. The dish is fitted with an impressive domed hexagonal cover, embellished with chased interlacing foliate and trellis designs, all on a matte background to the rounded sides. The upper portion of the domed cover is ornamented with further chased foliate decoration, accented with a paralleling scalloped border. The cover is surmounted with a magnificent cast hallmarkedsterling silver finial realistically modelled in the form of the aforementioned crest; a cap of maintenance turned up a lion passant. This exceptional antique sterling silver dish with lid was crafted by the important and renowned London silversmith Robert Garrard II, subsequently R & S Garrard & Co. The serving dish is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. NOTE: * The cap of maintenance is a velvet hat worn or carried by certain persons as a sign of nobility or special honour, granted by the monarch. The cap of maintenance is an insignia of the British sovereign and carried at the State Opening of Parliament, in addition to being incorporated into the coronation of any King of the United Kingdom. Condition This antique silver dish with cover is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent condition. Full hallmarks struck to the interior of the cover and surface of the base, in addition to part hallmarks to the finial are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
