About the Item

English Pearlware Blue Chinoiserie Large Shell-edged Dish, China House Pattern Variation, Probably Staffordshire, Circa 1810 The pearlware dish, with a molded shell-edge, is painted in underglaze blue with a Chinoiserie stylized landscape of trees to either side of a pagoda, one a weeping willow, within a hatched border at the edge of the central well. Dimensions: 15 3/4 inches x 11 3/4 inches (40.01cm wide x 29.85cm deep). Condition: Good with small flakes to glaze on the border at 1 o'clock see last photo. Reference: The magic of British shell-edged earthenware, 1775-1860, a Paper by Robert Hunter presented on 16 March 2024, English Ceramic Circle, Transactions, Volume 35, 2024, Page 200, #37 for a dish with similar elements of design including the plant and shadow in the foreground. Also see Lois Roberts in 'Painted in Blue', published by The Northern Ceramic Society, p.152, fig. 280 c for a plate with a similar subject. The Chipstone Foundation has an article by George L.
