An Exceptionally Fine & Large Silver Plated Venison Serving Platter & Meat Dome

About the Item

An exceptionally fine & very large silver-plated venison / meat platter & matching dome. The lobe shaped dome featuring a detachable handle cast in the form of a finely modelled stag, standing regally atop a naturalistically modelled rocky mound, in the lower foreground is the figure of a recumbent doe. Both the figures & the rocky mound-shaped base are individually cast & affixed to the dome by means of their mounting screws. One side bearing an engraved dedication dated 1912. The conforming ‘well & tree’ warming platter is fused to a water jacketed, hollow body that retains its original screwcap, which when filled with hot water maintains the serving temperature of the contents throughout the course of the meal. Sided by open carrying handles and raised overall upon four robust scrolled supports. Measuring 22” high (including handle) x 27” wide x 19” deep. Weighing a substantial 30.9 lbs. Although there are no apparent makers marks, there are however extremely strong stylistic similarities associated with works made by the highly esteemed British silversmithing firm, Elkington & Company of Birmingham, England. (It would be highly unlikely to find a comparative example that demonstrates such exceptional proportions & extremely fine decorative features, as well as remaining in such a fine state of condition). ELKINGTON & COMPANY BIO: George Richards Elkington & Henry Elkington were the first to discover and patent the silver plating process in the 1830's. They were subsequently awarded Royal warrants to several members of the British Royal Family including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, Queen Mary & King George VI. Elkington & Company were chosen as the suppliers of flatware on the British Royal Yacht Britannia, as well as in the luxury dining section of RMS Titanic.
