About the Item

A fine George III Sugar Basket made in London in 1793 by John Denzilow. The Basket stands on a shaped pedestal foot which is decorated with a band of foliate motifs on a prick dot ground. The shaped panelled main body is also engraved with an upper band of flower heads and foliate motifs. Both sides are also engraved with the Armorial of a Lady, surrounded by a drapery mantling cartouche. The basket has a gilded interior and is very well marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the handle. Additional information: Height, to the top of the handle: 6 inches, 15cm. Length: 5.25 inches, 13.13cm Width: 3.6 inches, 9cm.

A very good large silver swing handle basket of pierced oval form. The arched swing handle with two cast female busts arising from a leaf capped double C-scroll support. The cast and applied rim of shaped foliate and floral entwined decoration. The central bowl of the basket engraved with a rocaille cartouche containing an armorial. The top of the handle is decorated with a leaf form cartouche within which is the crest of a deer. The sides of the raised basket with hand cut pierced decoration. The whole standing on four cast and applied legs, decorated with a beautiful scrolling foliate design rising to high relief female faces, on leaf-form pad feet. Hallmarked to the underside for London 1747 by Edward Aldridge. The underside of the handle bears the lion passant and maker’s mark, both struck twice.
