Robert and William Wilson, silver platter or tray, from the mid-19th century, with a gadrooned rim and exquisitely engraved foliate motifs. It measures 17 1/2'' in length by 13 1/4'' in width by 7/8'' in height, weighs 49.8 troy ounces and bears hallmarks as shown. The dedication to Hon. N.B. Browne at the center can be related to Nathaniel Borradaile Browne, (1819-1875), a Philadelphia lawyer, businessman, and public servant. He served in both the federal and the Pennsylvania state governments, worked on the Philadelphia Centennial in Fairmount Park, and became the first president of Fidelity Trust Company. He was an Ivy League alum of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania.
Robert & William Wilson were American silversmiths in Philadelphia, active in partnership from roughly 1825–1846, then continuing as a mark until 1877. It was succeeded by William Wilson & Son. First produced in 1907 by the American silversmith company, Reed & Barton, this pair of sterling silver platters has repousse fruit motifs. Repousse is a metalwork technique where the verso (back) side is hammered to produce low relief images that can be seen when viewing the front. Curled leaves and C-scrolls seamlessly alternate along the outside of the platter to form scalloped edges. It appears in the Nishmat Kol Chai prayer, recited during Shabbat and holiday services as part of the blessings of praise and gratitude. The prayer expresses thanks to God for His goodness and mercy, highlighting the blessings and kindness He bestows upon the world.
Considered one of the greatest Jewish goldsmit and designer, Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert, was born in Germany, 1900-1981. He was born in a small village near Heidelberg, Germany to a poor Religious Orthodox family. During his childhood he suffered from discrimination due to his family's Lithuanian origin and his cleft lip, as well. Following the presentation of the works in the 1930's exhibition "Kult und Form" (Ritual and form") at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, his work became well-known in the German Jewish world. His works show the great influence of Modern design, especially of the Bauhaus movement. Wolpert's works avoid decoration, using clean and geometric shapes. In 1933, following the Nazi rise to power in Germany, he immigrated to the Land of Israel with his family. There, he worked in the "B.
