19th Century, Sevres Style "Battle of Waterloo" Porcelain Cup - Signed Desprez

About the Item

This finely painted porcelain cup and cover commemorating the Battle of Waterloo is a masterful example of 19th-century French historicist ceramic art, signed in the enamel at lower right within the grassy terrain “Desprez.” The piece is crafted in the style of Sèvres porcelain and bears the underside inscription “Waterloo / M. et E. / de Sèvres,” indicating a private commission or commemorative piece aligned with the Sèvres tradition but likely executed outside the official royal manufactory. The body is of baluster form with an elegantly flared lip and rests on a waisted pedestal base adorned with neoclassical motifs in gilt and lapis enamels. The scene, rendered in jewel-toned overglaze enamels and enriched with lavish gilding, depicts a dramatic military tableau. Napoleon Bonaparte is shown on horseback, centrally placed among an assembly of imperial officers and marching troops. The figures are detailed with great precision—note the individualized faces, elaborate regimental uniforms, and delicate gestures—demonstrating the hand of a highly skilled miniaturist painter. The reverse of the vessel features cavalry advancing through a dusky battlefield landscape, subtly blending earthy greens, soft mauves, and horizon blues to create a dreamlike evocation of campaign life. The cup’s handle, a highly stylized acanthus scroll terminating in a lion’s mask, is entirely parcel-gilt and modeled in the Rococo revival style, lending visual richness and dynamic contour. The signature "Desprez" identifies the artist as likely belonging to the lineage of French porcelain painters active during the late 19th century, many of whom worked independently or in association with prestigious ateliers producing commemorative wares for elite collectors and patriotic display. Desprez’s technique is particularly notable for the density of figural detail within a curved and diminutive surface—a hallmark of virtuoso porcelain painting. Measures: 4.25" d x 3" w x 4.375" h.
