Art Nouveau Cup Saucer Hand Painted Gold Purple White Porcelain by Rosenthal

About the Item

Sanssouci Cup and Saucer Gold and Purple on Thin White Porcelain by Philipp Rosenthal Circa 1900. This rare series of cups and saucers of the Art Nouveau period manufactured by Rosenthal is very refined. The white porcelain is thin, and weightless. Its delicate relief is finely hand painted with flowers in a combination of pink, light and dark purple and white colours and gold. The proportions and shape of the cup are unique and elegant. The transparency shows the distinction and quality of this early Rosenthal porcelain. The Sanssouci model was inspired by the decoration of the walls in the Sanssouci palace, the summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. Marked on the bottom with the Rosenthal 1891-1906 mark and the model name Sanssouci, numbered. Philipp Rosenthal (1855-1937) began business in Germany in 1884. Initially he purchased white ware from the company Hutschenreuther which was resold door to door after being hand-painted by his wife Maria. In 1891, he established a factory in Asch, Bohemia and began production of his own white ware. From 1897 to 1934, Rosenthal acquired further factories in Kronach, Marktredwitz, Selb, Waldenburg, Sophienthal, and Waldershof. Plate H1.8 D 10.5 cm Cup H6.5 D 5.5 cm Packed with the utmost care.
