Art Nouveau Porcelain Group 'The Mermaid Catch', by E. Herter, Meissen Ca 1900

About the Item

Exquisite Large Meissen Art Nouveau Porcelain Group: Exceptional detailed depiction of an unclothed sturdy fisherman with thick beard, freeing his catch, a beautiful mermaid adorned with pearl ribbons and aquatic plants with two intertwined fin legs, slowly gliding down from the fishing net, clinging to his leg. The group is supported from behind by a reed plant, as well as by the bundle of nets reaching to the ground below the nereid on which an octopus is cavorting, and is based on flat oval seashore base. The original large bronze figural group 'A Rare Catch' from 1896 is still in Berlin, Germany, in the Viktoriapark at Kreuzberg, Kreuzbergstraße, at the foot of the waterfall. Designer: ERNST HERTER (1846 - 1917) was a German sculptor and medalist, trained at the Academy of Arts (Berlin) and later with Ferdinand August Fischer, Gustav Blaeser and Albert Wolff. From 1869 he ran his own workshop. After making a study trip to Italy in 1875, he settled in Berlin and, from 1900, in the then independent Charlottenburg. Herter was a member of the Berlin Art Academy and held the degree of professor. Public monuments to Herter exist throughout Germany and the former German eastern territories, abroad, among others, Hermes for the Hermesvilla in Vienna. The model was created in 1897.
